“Tonight’s sale was 100 percent sold, we sold all 47 lots that we had on offer this evening, against a low estimate of eight million pounds, we made nearly 25 million pounds which is over 30 million dollars, and I think really the market totally responded to David Bowie and this wonderful collection that he put together.”

STORYLINE
ART OWNED BY DAVID BOWIE FETCHES £25M
Dozens of pieces of artwork once owned by the late British musician David Bowie went under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on Thursday (10 NOVEMBER 2016), with sales vastly exceeding the auction house’s expectations.
The 47 lots on sale fetched almost 25 million pounds (31.3 million U.S. dollars), more than doubling the pre-sale high estimate.
“I think really the market totally responded to David Bowie and this wonderful collection that he put together,” said Oliver Barker, Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe.
Highlight sales of the night included Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Air Power.”
Estimated to reach around 3.5 million pounds (4 million U.S. dollars), it went for more than double – at 7.1 million pounds (8 million U.S. dollars).
Also on sale were a number of works by British artists Damien Hirst, Frank Auerbach and Graham Sutherland.
The auction was the first of three to be held over the coming days of Bowie’s personal collection of around 400 works.
